CLAUDI CASANOVAS Galerie Besson Final Exhibition 4-27 May 2011

Galerie Besson’s final exhibition presents two important new works by the Catalan artist, entitled Pòrtic Marí (Gateway to the Sea), alongside a selection of earlier works, dating from 1988 – 2009.
This is Claudi’s fourteenth solo exhibition at the gallery since he first showed in its opening year programme year in 1988. Fittingly, one work in this show (Wall plate, ill. left) was exhibited in that first London exhibition 23 years ago, and is shown again at this final exhibition for Galerie Besson.
We were very sorry to hear that Anita Besson is closing Galerie Besson at the end of this show. I personally will miss my visits to the gallery and the enjoyment of the stunning work displayed, but wish Anita well in her new projects. Her note from her website is copied below:
DEAR FRIENDS…
Mar 2011
The gallery opened in 1988 and it has been an extraordinary and exciting 23 years for me. I have met many wonderful artists who have given me encouragement, support and friendship . I have learnt so much from the public, enthusiasts and above all from the artists. Now, after 245 exhibitions and aged 77, I have come to the decision to close the gallery at the end of June and start a new phase of my life – just as exciting but less demanding than organising 10 exhibitions each year!
It has been my intention that my gallery should be useful in promoting ceramics on the international market. I feel that that has been achieved.
My recent trip to Japan for the Lucie Rie travelling exhibition in six museums, which, so far, has attracted more than 400,000 visitors, and the wonderful reception I received there, has made me realise, more than I had ever expected, the possibilities which are still open to me.
On a personal level, I am sure that you can imagine that the decision to close the gallery has not been easy but I feel that this is the right time to change direction while I still have the energy to do so.
I shall continue to work, but without a gallery, and look forward to new projects as a consultant. I hope we shall remain in touch
With my best greetings,
Anita Besson, March 201

The Rising Star of 2011 is… Orli Ivanov

Sponsored by the Billmeir Charitable Trust, Rising Stars is our annual exhibition and educational event to support, exhibit and educate the art, craft and design stars of the future. Rising Stars closed on Saturday 7 May. The New Ashgate Gallery Angels voted for their ‘Rising Star’ of 2011 over the course of the exhibition.
They chose ceramic sculptor Orli Ivanov.
Orli will receive a prize of £300.
Gallery Director Joanne McCarthy says “We are delighted that the Gallery Angels have supported us again and supported this wonderful opportunity for young and emerging artists and makers. Orli is a deserving winner, we spoke today and she said winning the prize was ‘amazing’.”
Joanne further explains, “The Rising Stars programme would not be possible without the support of the Billmeir Charitable Trust who have helped us yet again to present the very best of emerging creative talent and to give us an opportunity to present an education programme to the exhibitors and local students from the UCA, Farnham.”

Greystoke Arts Festival 28 April to 9 May 2011

The exhibition showcased the work of some of the best Cumbrian Ceramic Artists at Greystoke church in Cumbria, UK. There was also a potters market and an open bowl event. There was work by Alvin Irving and many other well known Cumbrian Potters. I have been sent a link to a visual tour of the exhibition which i enjoyed and you may also:

The teapot below is similar to one of Alvins which was on display:

Beware another Scam

Typical of a lot going round the Arts world – basically, I like your work; I want to buy it; may try to get bank details from artist; will want to send money as a cheque or draft or credit card payment (likely to be stolen); wants to overpay or asks for payment for shipping costs (which he arranges through his own business!). The essence is that the artist ends up with worthless payment and has either parted with their art or with some money and is left with nothing in return.

Indicators are: poor language, sometimes interest in several pieces of work or general request. Wants details of your account, wants to do the shipping themselves and get you to pay, any indication of overpayment with you refunding money. generally an unusual request poorly composed should start alarm bells ringing!!  Always worth google-ing the details to see what comes up. Usually these scams are widely distributed and someone will have filed a report somewhere.

The current one i have had reported is from a “Robin Map” but they could be any names!! BEWARE and NEVER part with money if selling and always try and Corroborate sellers identity if possible.

The old adage – If it looks too good to be true, it probably is applies and also when dealing with unknown clients for the first time – BE Careful and watch for any unusual features of the order!!

Have a look at:

for details of this scam. it also gives others and a few links.
