Curtis Benzle – Porcelain-Color & Light: April 17-23, 2016

8 La Meridiana class (1280x960)

Curtis Benzle will be teaching a class in Tuscany, Italy next April 17-23, 2016, at La Meridiana; International Centre of Ceramics lameridiana.fi.it

The class is open to everyone.  While in the past we have had many exceptional artists in the class, we have also had many people with no previous experience with clay.  We will require no previous knowledge of ceramics again this year as we will be using specific techniques that do not require any “art talent”.

Despite this, I am very confident from years of teaching that the results will delight everyone and all will be surprised by the quality of work created.  In the 2012 and ‘14 classes everyone learned, shared and enjoyed making objects that included sculpture, jewelry, lighting and even wine stoppers.  The emphasis is totally on engaging in an interesting creative activity and making memories.

If you have any interest in spending a week in the heart of Tuscany, sharing the beauty of the region and creating some beauty of your own, this is a great opportunity.

If you have any questions, please visit the La Meridiana site or email me  ((curtisbenzle@gmail.com)) .  I don’t believe they have started promoting the 2016 classes yet but the class description is listed below.  Examples of work I have created using these same techniques is attached along with some student work from 2014.

Please consider signing up…..I would love to have you join us.

“Porcelain: Color and Light”, will celebrate the beauty and magic of light as it accentuates color, expands form and energizes surfaces in translucent porcelain.  We will discuss the unique, light transmitting characteristics of vitreous porcelain and will follow up with an exploration of techniques used to color and incorporate color and light into our artwork.

Topics will include relief carving (lithophane), color additions, colored clay techniques and porcelain formulas, as we consider colored, translucent  porcelain in its many manifestations; sculpture, pottery (agateware or neriagi), translucent lighting and jewelry.

Mornings will be devoted to exploration—demonstrations and technical discussions aimed at unlocking mysteries, expanding knowledge and empowering creativity.

Afternoons will be devoted to making.  Your quiet, personal experimentation or technical guidance and assistance—whatever it takes to help you bring out the best.

The workshop fee (980 Euros) includes lodging, tuition (6/7  hours per day with 12 hours studio time – (they do close the studio at night– but there are restaurants and wineries to explore), materials and firings, welcome dinner and a freshly prepared Tuscan lunch on the working days and a wine tasting dinner on one of the evenings of the week.
