Peter Lane’s work, especially in porcelain, is in many collections around the world and it has been widely exhibited in Britain, Austria, Belgium, France, Germany, Greece, Holland, Norway, Switzerland, Kuwait, Australia, Canada and the USA.
He is included in the highly selective Crafts Council INDEX “Craftsmen of Quality” in London. His ceramics have been illustrated and reviewed in numerous books, magazines and newspapers at home and abroad.

He describes himself as “basically a vessel-maker”, although he is interested more in form and surface than function in the work he produces. Much of his stimulus comes from his love of natural forms and landscape. He has become particularly well-known for his carved and/or pierced porcelain bowls, several of which are in important public collections.

His more recent work involves the use of brightly coloured ceramic stains on unglazed, polished porcelain exploring qualities of light and colour as experienced in “Skies” and landscape. In addition to the continuing influence of nature, some of his designs reflect his experience of modern architecture seen during his travels abroad. Peter is no longer making as his ceramic work is severely limited by arthritis but has been working more recently in photography and was recently selected as a Photography Member of the Devon Guid.

Peter Lane is well-known for his books (see more detail below), notably, STUDIO PORCELAIN (Pitman, London and Chilton, USA, 1980); STUDIO CERAMICS (Collins, London and Chilton, USA, 1983); CERAMIC FORM: Design and Decoration (Collins, London and Rizzoli, New York 1988 reprinted 1990) with an enlarged edition (A&C Black, London; Rizzoli, New York; Craftsman House, Australia) in 1998; CONTEMPORARY PORCELAIN: Materials, Techniques and Expressions (A&C Black, London and Chilton, USA 1995) and for his own creative work, especially in porcelain, which is included in many public and private collections around the world.

His ceramics have been widely exhibited and he has lectured and given numerous workshop demonstrations in Australia, New Zealand, Canada and the United States of America as well as many more in Britain.

He is a Member of the International Academy of Ceramics; a Fellow of the Craft Potters’ Association of Great Britain; a Fellow of the Society of Designer-Craftsmen, and his work is included in the British Crafts Council’s selective Index, Craftsmen of Quality, in London.
