Starter Studio Programme for Ceramics: Yorkshire Artspace

Call for Applications:  Starter Studio Programme for Ceramics.

Are you looking for a supportive programme which offers workspace, equipment, technical and mentor support and business advice as well as commission and exhibition opportunities?

Yorkshire Artspace’s highly successful Starter Studio Programme supports early career Designer Silversmiths & Jewellers and Ceramicists to reach the next stage in their careers. To foster new talent and support early career artists, Yorkshire Artspace runs two Starter Studio Programmes: one for Silversmithing & Jewellery and one for Ceramics. They are designed to help makers who are at an early career stage and committed to support and further develop their skills and business models,

In August 2010, Yorkshire Artspace expanded its workspace provision with 4 brand new artists’ studios in the Manor neighbourhood of Sheffield.  The studios are located approx. 2 kilometres from Sheffield City Centre on the site of a former deer park with Tudor remains.  We have been working closely with our partner organisation Green Estate to develop these purpose built eco-designed units.  With additional grants from Arts Council England and Foyle Foundation we have set up a shared starter studio to help early career ceramists kickstart their creative careers.

To date we have supported 9 makers. We are now in year 5 of our programme and are looking to support a further two start-ups from October 2015. Selected makers will have 24/7 access to an equipped space, mentoring from more established practitioners as well as ongoing business support. You will be part of a small and thriving community of crafts practitioners and also enjoy free access to our Starting Out course delivered through our Studio54 on-line professional development website and webinar programme. You will also have opportunities to exhibit your work at our Open Studio events.

We advise potential applicants to visit this fabulous workshop and studio complex before applying. To arrange a visit or to discuss this programme please contact Rachael Dodd, programme manager on rachael@artspace.org.uk or 0114 2761769. (Mon-Thur)

Mentors for the programme are Penny Withers, Brian Holland, Hanne Westergaard, Anna-MercedesWear and Emilie Taylor. All our mentors are experienced, nationally known ceramicists and regularly exhibit and sell their work in the UK and abroad.

Costs: £120 per month (includes heating and power) plus 1 month rent in advance, repaid on completing the programme. Deadline for applications is Friday 10th July. Interviews will take place in 2nd/3rd week of July and start date is early October 2015.
