The focus is on hand-building, looking at ceramic forms and surface textures. A whole range of work will be possible, including Slab ware, Extrusions, and Throwing
Started in 1975, the gallery and studio are housed in a converted 19th century stone barn near Holmfirth. Surrounded by breathtaking countryside (selected to feature on the TV series "Last of the Summer Wine"), the area is famous for its rural flavor and scenic walks. Now in its 42nd year, the gallery is known for its ceramics and Jim mixes functional ware with one off works and commissions.
The emphasis is on personal development and therefore suitable for a wide range of abilities, both beginners and more experienced potters. The focus is on hand-building, looking at ceramic forms and surface textures. A whole range of work will be possible, including Slab ware, Extrusions, and Throwing. Making methods and source materials are presented in a relaxed and supportive way. Examples, demonstrations and discussion will form the basis of tuition.
An evening of Raku firing is also on the agenda. There's an optional chance to see Commissioned ceramic work in Holmfirth and visit artists' studios midweek. Completed personal pieces will be glazed at the end of the week and stoneware fired after the course. These can be collected later or posted on to you if required.
