This course seeks to provide ideas for risk taking and creating new outcomes, which may then become individual to you, to perhaps help you develop unexpected ways of seeing and making

Course Details

We absolutely love making pots, but in what ways is our journey enriched with the fresh enquiry of ideas?

Students will use stoneware or porcelain clay. They will be encouraged and supported by Jeremy and Sandy to explore specific exercises to brainstorm, invent and expand upon new work. Students can choose whether or not they'd prefer to work within the framework of particular functional items, but the course will be less driven by design and preconceived end product, and rather more by playfulness and the materials and processes of soft clay, slip and wheel-throwing.

We can barely contain ourselves for excitement! We are very delighted to welcome Australian potter Sandy Lockwood to Wobage for this course in August 2014, coinciding with a research visit to the UK and her participation in the European Woodfire Conference in Denmark later in August. Sandy will join us for two full days out of the four in total, for demonstration and tutorial.

From afar, we have all long-admired Sandy's beautiful softly thrown domestic ware along with her more sculptural body of work. Can't wait!

The studio invites a maximum of 9 students for this course. Each participant will enjoy unlimited access to a power wheel for the full duration. These are a selection of different models; Rayefco, Alsager and Shimpo.

It will be expected that students attending this course will already have some experience in wheel throwing. The course will obviously cater for students at different levels of capability. However, applications are welcome only from students who are confidently already able to centre and to comfortably lift-up 2 or more pounds of clay into an upright shape.

This course is specifically designed to advance skill base and ideas, and in contrast to other courses on the 2014 programme, Wobage will not be inviting students to select any of the work that is made during the 4 days to gloss fire. Students may take home any of the work that they make, green, for which there will be a small materials charge of 1.00/lb in addition to the course fee. We are happy to bisque fire a maximum selection of 8 pots for you to pick up at a later date, at a cost of 1.50/lb.

The course begins at 10am on the first morning, completing at 4pm on the last day. Tuition hours are otherwise 9.30am - 4.30pm. The studio is freely available for students to work outside of these hours, early or late. Fabulous home-made vegetarian lunches along with morning and afternoon refreshments are included in the price of this course. Also included, an evening of party with student baked wood-fired pizzas from the Wobage outdoor oven!
