Clive Bowen is internationally known for his fluent throwing techniques and free decoration of slipware. As in previous years, throwing and making skills will be at the heart of the course. Clive will be attempting to transmit the skills that are needed to retain the essential freshness and life in the clay, whilst achieving well-made, functional pots.
This year we will be using terracotta clay and slips to explore different methods of slipware decoration. Clive started his career as a painter and the relationship between decoration and the piece itself is of paramount importance for him. The aim will be to show students how to decorate in a way that is integral to the pot rather than applying some sort of surface 'design'.. Students will be encouraged to produce work to a consistent standard, whilst retaining the spontaneity that is the hallmark of slipware.
As always, the course will focus on the individual, with hands-on help to improve technique and overcome difficulties.
The workshop will cover the making of a wide variety of pieces. As well as thrown pieces there will be sessions on the making and decorating of pressed ware and tiles.
