Marston Pottery : New Catalogue of Phil Roger's Chawan
A NEW CATALOGUE OF 40 CHAWAN SPECIALLY SELECTED TO CELEBRATE 40 YEARS AS A POTTER.
I started my life as a professional potter at the very end of 1978. I converted an old shop in Rhayader that had been the towns gas board showroom. Upstairs lived Fred Turford who, when a working man, fed coal into the retort ( a kind of furnace) to creat the gas that supplied the town. The retort lived next to the gasometer and Fred thought it funny that I had put a kiln in his basement when he had spent his working life using firebrick for a totally different purpose.
In 1984 I moved to Cefnfaes farm and converted the farm buildings into the pottery. Cefnfaes gave me the room I needed to expand...to build the kilns I needed....Oil and wood....saltglaze...I can't believe I have been here 33 years! I still think of it as the new place.
To celebrate those 40 years i have selected 40 Chawan from recent firings and i invite you to follow the link to the catalogue where all is explained. Do please ask for an image of the inside of any bowl if you feel you need it.
I hope you enjoy looking at them and feel free to ask any questions you might have or request further images.
