Contemporary Applied Arts : Home from Home
Gabriele Koch, Kochevet Bendavid, Jitka Palmer, Regina Heinz and other notable makers
Home from Home is an ambitious exhibition project which explores the ways in which creativity and making are interwoven with identity and a sense of belonging in the lives of 25 contemporary ceramicists, whose cultural inheritance originates outside England and who have come to live and work in the UK (post-childhood). The exhibition will explore whether the act of developing an artistic voice has helped these individuals to feel more a part of British society - are they at home in England? Is the UK a ‘home from home'?
The artists' voices will form the core of this project and will be heard via various media - ceramic objects, a specially commissioned film and a publication. Alongside key examples of their work, film and audio recordings of their personal testimonies will be the first step in a dialogue with the public.
Participating makers include co-curator Kochevet Bendavid (Israel) and Svend Bayer (Denmark and Uganda), Charles Bound (USA), Carina Ciscato (Brazil), Karen Downing (USA), Delfina Emmanuel (Sardinia), Ferri Farahmandi (Iran), Regina Heinz (Austria), Akiko Hirai (Japan), Jin Eui Kim (South Korea), Gabriele Koch (Germany), Agalis Manessi (Greece),Valeria Nascimento (Brazil), Magdalene Odundo (Kenya), Jitka Palmer (Czech Republic), Merete Rasmussen (Denmark) and Takeshi Yasuda (Japan).
