About the Museum
The museum was established early in the 19th century by Alexandre Brongniart, director of the Manufacture nationale de Sèvres, with a goal of collecting and studying fine ceramics of all origins. It issued its first catalog in 1845, and became independent of the factory in 1927.
Today the museum contains excellent collections of earthenware, faience, porcelain, and pottery from around the world, dating from earliest times to the present. It contains roughly 50,000 objects, of which about 5,000 were manufactured by Sèvres.
