Linda has written a new book - Advanced Pottery which will be available to order from July from www.halebooks.com and amazon (try to use our front page link to Amazon please?). Publishing date is October 2010 and I look forward to seeing a copy for comment in due course. Congratulations Linda! I hope it will be a great success.
I have now talked to Linda and you may be interested in the background to her writing the book:
The introduction to came through London Potters via an email from Robert Hale, publishers asking if my husband knew anyone who might like to write a pottery book, so he suggested Linda.
She had 18 months to finish the book, 50,000 words and 600 images!. As she had just exhibited at Rufford and she started by contacting quite a few of the potters and asking for images of their work. All but a few very famous potters were willing to send images.
My husband, Henry, photographed pots from various collectors, and making sequences in various potters’ studios. The publishers wanted the book to be called Advanced Pottery as there are already so many beginners’ books around, so Linda included techniques such as throwing and coiling large jars (with images of Adam Buick), casting double-walled moulds (with Solomia Zoumaras), unusual ways of making teapots (with Jeremy Nichols and Ruthanne Tudball sequences) and decorating (with Doug Fitch slip decorating sequences) .
There are also chapters on tableware design, glazing, firing and a kiln building sequence (to Joe Finch’s design).
Linda enjoyed writing the book as it’s very different to making and her next book will be on ‘Colour in Glazes’ for A&C Black. - Stephen Dee, Editor
