Lettering on Ceramics - Mary White
01 Jul 2004
Press Release:
Lettering on Ceramics is a basic handbook covering various methods of
lettering on ceramics, including brush work, carving and glazing. It looks in
depth at a number of artists, exploring projects they have worked on and how
they have tackled them, and how words are used to broaden work. It also
includes a selection of beautifully drawn alphabets to work from or copy.
Imposing lettering onto ceramics started as an ancient form of
communication and has gradually evolved into an art form in its own right.
This new title in the Ceramics Handbooks series covers the development of
this tradition in detail, along with methods of imposing letters onto clay,
including stamping, stencils, slip-trailing, resist methods and relief work
amongst others.
About the Authors:
Mary White is a calligrapher and ceramic artist who has had exhibitions all
over the world, and has also taught in various countries. She is a fellow of
both the Craft Potter Association and the Society of Scribes and
Illuminators.
