I aim to make thought provoking, sophisticated hand-built ceramics that pay homage to ancient skills while embracing contemporary influences. Often dictated by classic vessel form and containment, works are not designed as functional.
Having recently been awarded a Scottish Arts Council Grant towards creative development I am about to launch new work resulting from this exploration period that began July 2009, at Roger Billcliffe Gallery, Glasgow, March 2010
All my work is hand-built.
It can take upwards of eight hours physical work to build each vessel over a period of weeks. In a world where pressure is on instant results, dominated by commercialism and technology, I enjoy the meditative nature of allowing the form to evolve with bare hands, imagination, and human labour using the most primitive and natural materials available - the earth itself.
I favour the coiling method of construction, occasionally slab and pinching for more complex forms. The surface is refined using scrapers when leather hard and further refined using abrasive paper when dry.
Work is fired three times increasing to final temp 1150˚C in an electric kiln.
Between each firing the surface is sanded using Silicon Carbide paper, then diamond abrasives, working through the grades, coarse to fine.
Finally, a wax polish applied and buffed to a soft sheen to seal the surface and enhance the colour of the naked clay.
