Current Work

Recent work has been in reduced stoneware, some porcelain, and raku, with everything being made on the wheel. The stoneware and porcelain is functional, while my raku often uses variations on the same forms - especially bottles and bowls - but also includes more experimental work.

Technical Information

Work is thrown on a slow Leach kickwheel. For stoneware I use DSS clay from Doble's, for raku a mix of equal parts of T-Material and HF porcelain. All work is biscuit fired to 980°C.

For stoneware I use ash, tenmoku, talc and shino glazes, reduction firing with propane to cone 10 in a 7 cu.ft. ceramic fibre kiln.

For raku I use a soft borax frit / china clay glaze, firing with propane to a nominal 900°C. in an oil drum kiln, and reducing in sawdust.

History

While teaching in London I went to a pottery evening class at North Kensington Institute and immediately fell in love with clay. Within three months I was going to four classes a week, to a Saturday course at Sir John Cass College, Whitechapel, and reading Bernard Leach's ‘A Potter's Book'.

A year after my first contact with clay I was teaching ceramics at secondary level and at evening class. Later I was given secondment to take a degree, and finally left teaching in 1997, though I still teach adult classes. During my time in schools I reckon I did some 9000 firings!

As a potter I have worked extensively in reduced stoneware, slipware, and raku, and these three areas of ceramics continue to fascinate me.

Availability: My workshop is in a garage crowded with pots, my wheel, kiln and materials - I don't have a separate showroom. Visitors are very welcome but please telephone first.

Directions: Leave M1 at J 15 - not 15A or 16 - and take the Northampton road. (There is a 60 limit on part of this road). After a mile and a half, after the exit for Brackmills, take the exit for Town Centre / Bedford / H & E. Get into the middle lane.

Take the second exit from the roundabout - signed Abington. Follow the road up the hill, past the speed camera, straight over at the lights. Take the first right after the lights into Abington Park Crescent (the park will be on your left), then third right into Weston Way, then immediately right into Ridgeway. No. 50 is halfway up, on the right.
