Artist's Statement

My work explores the effects of erosion and decay on surfaces. I’m fascinated by the surfaces created by nature upon manmade objects, metal, wood or plastics. I find decades of painted layers over an object to be particularly enthralling, but I am also captivated by the effects the environment has upon naked metals.

A further source of inspiration and continual interest to me are naturally formed layers laid down by the natural geological processes of the planet, such as sedimentary layers and volcanic surfaces.

I use these inspirations to create a developing series of forms and surface finishes that embody my ideas and inspirations and express the innate beauty I see in these natural processes. I seek minimalism of form in order to find balance with the complex surfaces I create.

Technical Information

All work is currently stoneware with firing ranges from 1240-1260 degree centigrade. All work is currently electric fired in an oxidised kiln.

Construction methods are: Thrown, thrown & altered, press moulded and extruded.

My multi-layer work is created using multiple layers of slips and oxides build up over a form which I then work back into to achieve my surfaces. which are contrasted inside with smooth matt white glazes or satin blue.

The volcanic work is glazed with heavily oxide saturated volcanic glazes and lined with contrasting smooth matt white or satin blue glazes.

Multi-layer work is food safe but is generally intended for decorative use. Volcanic work is not considered food safe.

Background History and Education

I served 16 years in the Royal Air Force from 1991 until 2007 before being medically discharged due to ill health.

I decided to take the opporunity to go back to school and do something creative. During my foundation course I found myself drawn to ceramics and have spent the last four years working towards the skills and knowledge and developing a practice that would allow me to spend my future making ceramics and developing my ideas. I'm particularly interested in surface textures and in partucular those created by nature and time on manmade objects.

Fresh out of University I'm keen to establish my practice, which goes well. And as well as making my current range of work I'm continually developing my ideas and exploring new glazing materials, and ways of working with glazing materials and clay bodies to achieve goals driven by my inspirations.
