Artists Statement

My work explores the creation of an illusion of depth and visual movement on the surface of porcelain artworks, through the intuitive, yet informed application of colour and glaze.
My work explores how colour and glaze can be manipulated and articulated to create the illusion of depth and spatial instability on fine sheets of porcelain paper clay.

My palette is inspired by the Lake District in Cumbria where I was born and raised, and incorporates subtle shades and saturated hues of blue-green and reddish brown terracotta. These colours are painted adjacent and on top of one another in carefully arranged compositions to create contrast, harmony and visual flux; an aesthetic experience reminiscent of this complex, beautiful landscape.

The printing method I have adopted allows me to work from within the image, building up fine layers of semi-transparent and opaque colour which when printed reveal subtle nuances and effects hidden from me during the making process. My work is all hand-painted, thus each piece is unique with a delicate ephemeral quality.

Current Work Available from:

Highhead Sculpture Valley, Ivegill, Carlise,Cumbria
‘Oriel Makers Gallery’, Pen y Lan, Cardiff, Wales
‘The Mick Oxley Gallery’, Craster, Northumberland
The Jane Adams Gallery, St Just, Cornwall
'The Crown Gallery' Lonsdale Street, Carlisle

Alison plans to have work available FOR SALE from her website from around the end of 2011.

Technical Information

My work is made with Royale Porcelain from Valentine Clays Ltd, which is slaked into a slip and combined with paper pulp, and is coloured with terracotta and porcelain slips blended with blue-green stain. Alkaline frit solution and manganese dioxide are also used to enhance surface subtleties and nuances.
The work is fired to 1260ºC in an oxidation atmosphere. My work is predominately wall-based.
