Artist's Statement

Carpentry was my trade for 20 years; during research of Isle of Wight pottery - watching a bowl being thrown on a wheel - I was inspired to take up ceramics, now an absorbing pastime.
I have attended lessons in the rudiments of pottery-making, but I am mainly self taught.
The wheel is central to my work from which many forms develop. I enjoy working mainly with red clay as it has a warmth and glow not readily found in other clay bodies. I use a limited pallete of slips and glazes to allow the colour of the clay to reveal itself.
Ideas for hand-carving, my main interest, are inspired by the surrounding area and countryside on the Isle of Wight - tracks made by man, machine and by nature, leaving their imprint on the earth. Architecture, engineering and machinery add further interest to the designs. My work continually develops - I embrace new challeges and strive to achieve complementary forms, surfaces, textures and patterns.
I am co-author of three books regarding Isle of Wight pottery, 'A Century of Ceramics' being the first book to be dedicated to Island potters. I have also co-organised with my wife four major Isle of Wight pottery exhibitions. The main aim of these exhibitions, and of setting up the Isle of Wight pottery website www.isleofwightpottery.co.uk, is to highlight the work of Island potters, past and present.
