Artists Statement

Claire’s current work seeks to explore relationships between body and mind, material and process and inside and outside. Her pieces represent a sensual journey enabling expression of heart and mind.

The repetitive and ritualistic process of throwing linked to conscious breathing patterns enhances her awareness during the making process, heightening the intimate connection between material and maker.  

The vessel serves as an object of containment, that of holding a space creating associations with the state of clarity and an empty vessel. Claire seeks to make work that is imbued with a quality of stillness, choosing porcelain as her preferred medium.

The unglazed external surface contrasting to the vibrancy of the glazed internal surface representing that which is hidden; making reference to our inner potential, to that which is beyond mind. This represents an exploration of the commonality and parallels between ceramics and yoga which is of particular interest to me.

Other Information:
Outside of the studio I am involved in leading clay and art workshops with children, both mainstream and special needs, through residencies in schools and community groups.I am also availiable to give workshops to adults and gives talks and demonstrations.

In addition to my ceramic activites I practice, study and teach Yoga. As well as inspiring my work it also gives me discipiline, a reflective space and is a great antedote to modern living.

Open Studios:
In 2000 I set up a studio workshop producing ceramics, initially small scale individualised repeatable pieces, soon changing focus to producing one off coiled larger pieces of work. I participated in Dorset Art Weeks 2002 and 2004 opening the studio to the public.
