Artists Statement
Claire’s current work seeks to explore relationships between body and mind, material and process and inside and outside. Her pieces represent a sensual journey enabling expression of heart and mind. The repetitive and ritualistic process of throwing linked to conscious breathing patterns enhances her awareness during the making process, heightening the intimate connection between material and maker. The vessel serves as an object of containment, that of holding a space creating associations with the state of clarity and an empty vessel. Claire seeks to make work that is imbued with a quality of stillness, choosing porcelain as her preferred medium. The unglazed external surface contrasting to the vibrancy of the glazed internal surface representing that which is hidden; making reference to our inner potential, to that which is beyond mind. This represents an exploration of the commonality and parallels between ceramics and yoga which is of particular interest to me. Current Work
