Current Work

wI am interested in duality and in the co-existence of extremes: calm/chaos, safety/fear, fragility/solidity.

Working with the vessel I use throwing/altering and slab building, as the two methods allow me to create opposing qualities in the work through the different surfaces achieved. I then join these elements but leave the seams deliberately exposed, so that they act both to fuse and separate the different elements in the work.

The painting and surfaces in my work are influenced by the natural, urban decay of London, such as peeling billboards and the gestural quality of graffitti. My work is also informed by the Abstract Expressionists Cy Twombly, Jackson Pollock and Peter Voulkos.

My aim is for the work to be both fragile and solid, active and contemplative: a harmonising of extremes.

Work generally available from:
Galerie zur Stellmacherei, Westerstede, Germany
Smart Gallery, Batley, West Yorkshire

I use Potclays studio white earthenware and underglaze colours for decoration. The work is fired in a toploader to 1080 degrees.
