Artists Statement

I divide my time between my studio in North Wales and lecturing at the University of Central Lancashire, in Preston, UK.

My work draws inspiration from many disparate sources including forms and textures found in engineering, architecture and the natural landscape. I am interested in challenging and pushing boundaries, continually seeking new material qualities and processes.
I strive to make work that has visual richness whilst conveying a sense of quietness and simplicity - the exclusion of the inessential. I also hope my work has an ambiguity, possibly suggestive of ritual or ceremony, yet ultimately leaving open questions of purpose or meaning.
My work is rooted in materials and involvement in the making process. I enjoy the challenge of striving for new aesthetic qualities through researching new techniques and alternative uses of materials. More recently work has involved developing a process of kiln casting ceramic aggregates and glass forming materials (a process more commonly associated with glass making). All my work is finished through a process of grinding and polishing.

My personal work is closely inter-related with my research interests – each informing the other.
My current research project ‘The Aesthetic of Waste’ (funded by a major AHRC Research Grant), aims to explore how waste mineral materials might be ‘reconstituted’ within a kiln-casting process, in order to create a material that has unique aesthetic properties and possible applications within a variety of architectural contexts.

I exhibit my work widely throughout the UK and internationally, regularly lecturer on my work and participate in international ceramics symposium. Work is featured in numerous books, journals and public and private collections.

Member of the International Academy of Ceramics, UK Crafts Council Index of Selected Makers and Fellow of The Craft Potters Association.

Current Work

Range of semi-sculptural forms, that place an emphasis on simplicity of form, with rich visual surface texture of clay body.

Work generally available from:
Contemporary Ceramics (7, Marshall Street, London)
Contemporary Applied Arts (Percy Street, London);
Scottish Gallery, Edinburgh.

Technical Information

Clay bodies, predominently porcelain and terracotta, are prepared by adding a wide variety of 'aggregate' materials such as coloured grogs, molochite, and other large grained ceramic materials, plus organic materials that leave texture when fired.
Pieces are formed in plaster moulds or shaped over wooden formers.
Firing is in the range 1150 - 1230 deg. C.
All pieces are ground back, using a diamond power grinder (Flex Electra Angle Grinder - supplied by DK Holdings Ltd.).
Grinding reveals the rich textural surface of the clay body.
All work is finished through a light polish of the surface.
