I explore a fascination with aerodynamics and architecture via the making of hand-built abstract forms of convex, concave and flat planes of clay. Every stage of production is an improvised experiment in a quest to produce original and balanced compositions that highlight and intensify the beauty of light and shadow on surface.
My current practice incorporates a ceramic shape design and product development consultancy for the ceramic industry, craft potters and students. I also teach these skills, learned in an industrial setting over 25 years, at several universities nationally and at in-depth residential master classes (please contact me for dates, course content and prices).
My plaster model and mould making courses cover the following skills -
Basic technical drawings/sketches
Plaster Model making/carving by hand
Plaster lathe and motorised bench whirler turning
Teapot handle and spout modelling
Profiling/sledging with a metal tool
Drop-out and multi-part mould making
Moulding a found object or existing ceramic shape
All abilities are welcome to attend, from the enthusiastic beginner, to the more experienced maker who wants to develop their skills further.
- Bring your current project with you or start something new with expert guidance from me at my workshop in the picturesque Peak District.
- I also offer one day one-to-one courses at dates to suit you and a complete shape design and model/mould making service.
