Artist's Statement

My work is based upon and flows from my inner life of prayer, meditation and spiritual discipline. For this I concentrate on the spiritual heart, which for me is the source of joy, peace and oneness. These qualities I hope to offer to people who see my work.

Focusing on the spiritual heart also encourages a child-like simplicity, which I feel shaping my life and work. This could explain my preference for bright colours, simple shapes and cheerful, beautiful things.

I am particularly drawn to clay because of the infinite number of ways it can be shaped, treated and used. Its limitless potential is a continual inspiration to me.

Ultimately, I like to make pieces that make people smile, and in this way make the world a happier place.

Current Work

Early projects with porcelain and red earthenware have largely been replaced with pieces now being made from white earthenware bodies and finished with bright surfaces, both engobes and glazes. My work includes both ‘narrative' pieces - figures and animals, as well as vases/containers for flowers. In my vases I aim to honour flowers in a unique way that is also rich in innocent humour. These vessels are also an opportunity to use clay's special qualities of bendability and squidgeability - a change from my normal practice of intensive modelling and moulding with the narrative works.

Latest Work:
"etc" group show - Porcelain badges made for the 'etc' group show opening this week (26. 11. 2005) at the University of the West of England before travelling nationally and overseas

'Prints from the Potter' - A set of 60 original prints (each one hand printed by myself and different - think of a relief/monoprint). Again, this opens this week at Blackwell's book shop in Park Street, Bristol. This show is the 20th Anniversary of the 'mini print' project
