Artists Statement

Artists Statement

Having worked for twenty years in maiolica - which required precision and repetition - I found it liberating to throw with stoneware and fire with wood and salt. The process is not random but it does require one to surrender more to the firing. And these days it is the firing that intrigues me.

I am now working with gas fired carbon trap shinos. These are mysterious glazes; beautiful but elusive. I am obsessed by the desire to understand them.

As a maker, whether I am throwing or firing, I am always seeking that point of balance between the knowable which I can determine and the unexpected which gives the work life.
