Technical Information

I use Ashraf Hanna Raku clay which is very good for hand building and strong for the firing.

I coat the vessels with terra sigalata before biscuit firing to 1000c then cover the vessels with resist slip and resist glaze before Raku firing to approximately 850-900c.

The pieces are smoked in a variety of ways to achieve different results, whatever the vessel dictates really.

Career Background

After working for a number of years in our industrial ceramics business, my passion was to return to hand built ceramics, slowly coaxing the clay into the desired form.

I set up my first studio in my cellar at home. My volcanic ceramics were inspired by a visit to Lanzarote where  the sculptor Cesar Monrique had designed  fabulous buildings to fit on with the volcanic landscape.

After showing this work I was invited to take an 18 month residency at The Sculpture Lounge where I have developed my Nautilus Collection and I now have studio space.
