Current Work

Hand built smoke-fired vessels and bowls in various shapes and colours.

Each piece is decorated using several layers of coloured slips, which are burnished repeatedly and polished before being low fired. They are then smoke-fired in wood shavings or newspaper with areas masked to resist the smoke. The smoke-firing process enables dark lines and shapes to be added to the design areas.

Inspiration for the decoration comes from patterns and colours found in fabrics, paintings, stained glass windows and mosaics.

I choose to hand build for the individuality it gives the pieces and I find that the unpredictability, excitement and frustration of smoke-firing provides the perfect antidote to the careful and laborious building and decoration process.
