Artist's Statement

I am now at a stage in my life where there are no commercial or personal pressures on me. I am doing and making exactly what I wish. I have started to paint pictures in oils again after many years and consequently have chosen to work in earthenware with slip and engobe decoration so that I can reflect the inspirations for my paintings in my pottery.

I have developed a black body and fire to 1160 centigrade high biscuit and glost fire at 1040 centigrade I convert my art work to lithos. Since developing this body and experimenting with art work and glazes it has taken my work in a new direction which I am intending to explore further

I have always enjoyed the process of making things and like to share that experience with others.

Current Work

I throw, hand build. model, mould and slip cast both functional, domestic and non functional ware in a terracotta body. I then decorate with slip after biscuit firing and decorate further with engobes before glaze firing. At present I am making some moulds for casserole dishes which I hope to be ready for the early part of next year.

Technical Information

I use Valentines standard red terracotta and mix my slips, engobes and glazes to my own recipes. I use an electric kiln and biscuit fire to 1000 degrees C and 1120 degrees C when glaze firing.

1961 -1965 G.P.O. apprentice telephone engineer.
1965 - 1978 G.E.C telecommunications engineer/manager.
1978 - 1980 Chesterfield College of Art Studio Pottery diploma course
1980 - 1984 Workshop and shop at the Coach House, Lea, Nr. Matlock, Derbyshire.
1984 - 1998 Workshop and shop next to Chatsworth House Estate Farm Shop, Derbyshire.
1998 - 2000 Chilling out. Build a workshop at home.
2000 - 2003 Olympia Moulds employed part time making moulds.
2003 - Present. Making pots mainly for Renishaw Hall on the Sitwell Estate. Experimenting with slips and glazes.
2010 (January) retired from Netherthorpe.
2010 to present working from workshop at home

1980 - 1984 Hunloke Adult Education Centre Chesterfield.
1981 - 1984 Peter Webster Adult Education Centre Chesterfield.
2004 - 2010 Netherthorpe School - ceramics with GCSE & A level students.
2005 - 2008 Parkside Community School - Art with GCSE students.
