Artist's Statement

Artist's Statement

I am inspired by organic forms, classical curves and flowing lines....nothing challenges my skills more on the potters wheel than the bottle. A narrow foot emerging into a wide bellied form with soft shoulders flowing into an elegant narrow neck, proportion balance and soft changes of direction are a constant challenge to refining my throwing skills.
I push the clay to its limits and endeavour to create a delicate balance between form and glaze.

Crystalline Glazes
My multi layered crystalline glazes are fluid and organic, demand meticulous preparation and application and require exacting formulations with the slightest change in clay body or glaze ingredient leading to losses that surely test my resolve and passion for this seductive technique.
Like gems from deep beneath the earths crust, crystals within the glaze matrix refract light giving my pots a three dimensional unique organic quality which cannot be matched by any other glaze finish.

Reduction Glazes
My reduction and shino glazes keep me in touch with my earthy beginner origins of the early 1970's and allow me the freedom to explore and play unconstrained while discovering how these opposite ends of the spectrum influence each other.

Current Work and Availability

Current Work and Availability

My current work continues to explore crystalline and the chemistry involved to develop glazes and colour combinations that are at one with my forms.

My shino and reduction glazes allow me the playtime to indulge myself and break away from the exacting demands of the crystalline technique.

While exploring reduction glazes takes me to the opposite end of the spectrum and back to my roots I am also enjoying their influence on my creative thought process and particularly how the crossover gives me new directions and applications for my crystalline.

Technical Information

Technical Information

My crystalline glazes are generally made up of several multi layered glazes fired to cone 11 under oxidation. They are fired in both electric and gas kilns with gas also allowing me the option of low temp reduction for my crystalline. I use several porcelain clays with each imparting their own nuances to different glazes.

My reduction bodies are generally stoneware blends that I have developed to give subtle variations to my glaze finishes. Porcelains are also used when I need colour intensity.
My interest in reduction covers shinos, crawls, oatmeals, craters and underglaze slips fired to cone 11

Career Background

Career Background

I have been making since the early 1970's employing 23 potters during the 80s and 90s producing a wide range of hand thrown domestic stoneware and cookware which was sold to the retail gift and gallery market across Australia.

A devastating fire followed by the 90s recession and consequent fluctuating market forces eventually led to a change in personal philosophy.

After much soul searching I decided to change direction and focus my energies entirely on rediscovering my long lost creative side......the dream that I once had in my early days as a potter and my real journey of self discovery had begun.
