Current Work

Current Work

Theories and concepts behind my work.
Kellie Miller embraces an experimental approach to her work; she aims to balance form, colour and texture. Her goal is to create work that crosses many disciplines and that it is viewed in its own right, without preconceptions.

She places importance on the artistic merit, design elements and the craft within her work; and believes without a fine balance of these there can be no meaningful art, craft or design.

Her desire is to create environments for her pieces to belong; where the work is fluid and moves from objects for the table to works on the floor and wall. It is vital that her work is accessible, either by function or the way in which each piece entices the viewer to touch and or hold.

She is a creative free spirit and produces pieces that involve many different genres and artistic practices. She is not restricted by rules or regulations.

Kellie’s work is inspired by movements such as, Bauhaus, The Art and Crafts, The Omega workshops, Dada, Art Nouveau, Art Deco, Cubism and the Surrealists. She has been influenced by artists and designers associated with these movements including: Kurt Schwitters, Pablo Picasso, William Morris, Vassily Kandinsky and Paul Klee.

She has always admired how many of these artists and designers freely moved from one art form to another to create original and exciting new works.

Often her creations arise from a conversation or words from a novel. Like many of her admired artists, she doesn’t restrict herself to one medium or one approach, she likes to be inspired and produce work from her heart.

Kellie is an International artist renowned for her ceramic vessels and wall pieces. Her works are held in museum collections around the world including Taiwan, Japan and the UK. Her work has been featured widely in the press, including The Times, The Guardian, Elle Decoration and Homes and Gardens.

History

History

1995 to Present - Ceramicist - Biscuit Studio
www.biscuitstudio.co.uk
I work from my studio in Hove which I set up in 1996. Developing and improving the studio has been as vital as the development of my work. Recently I have nearly doubled the available space, which I now share with three other artists. The space currently consists of four open plan working spaces, three communal areas and dedicated exhibition area. In June 2006 I will be developing Biscuit Studio to incorporate a training space for artists, flexible studio spaces to hire on a daily/weekly bases. I will also be running courses and seminars from the studio.

2004 - 2008 - Nine Dots Arts
I setup Nine Dots Arts initially as a corporate arts rental scheme, which has benefited both the corporate client and artist. Nine Dots is a business that provides support, training and practical advice to artists and brings creativity to businesses through artists and artistic activity. Nine Dots will offer all of the courses and training services at Biscuit Studio.

2005 - Present - Arts Consultant
Over the last year many artists have approached me to advise them on their working methods and practices. My consultancy advice has included the following; Planning your projects, Funding your project, Business Planning, Setting up and running ceramic/design and art studios, Development and producing creative products, Marketing your Art, Business Sponsorship, Marketing Material, Event Management- Exhibitions and Shows, Publicity, Presenting yourself and your product, Selling your Art, Pricing, Working with galleries and outlets, Critical approach to your work, Understanding Art and Craft Markets.

1999 - 2006 - Hove Arts
www.hovearts.co.uk
Hove Arts is a professional artist’s organisation, formed by myself and other artists in 1999. My role in the organisation is Sponsorship Coordinator and Corporate Liaison Officer. I am responsible for promoting the group in corporate exhibitions and for obtaining sponsorship support for our activities.
Initially Hove Arts came together to link our venues- open houses, studios and workshops initially as part of the Brighton Festival. The idea was to recognise and develop the art activities in Hove.
My position with in Hove Arts gives me the opportunity to network with other artists, to work with local businesses and also provides me with artistic support.

2004 - 2006 - Board of Management The Basement - Formerly known as Brighton Fringe Arts Production (BFAP)
www.brightonfringe.net
I served on the board of management of BFAP, an arts organisation founded in 1996, which exists to facilitate and support emergent artists producing Live Arts. The BFAP is constantly evolving which places special responsibilities on board members. My role on the board is to support and advise BFAP on their publicity, marketing, venue and events, sponsorship and fundraising.

1995 - 1998 - Teaching Ceramics/Pottery
Evolution Arts & Natural Health Centre

Teaching adults, young people and people with special needs, evening courses, day courses and summer schools.
