Artist's Statement

Artist's Statement

I am an English/Iranian ceramicist living in Boston, US. I’m enchanted by the rich ceramics traditions of my parents’ home countries: Iran and England. The designs and colors of Persian carpets, patterns in miniature painting, and the nature-inflected forms and surfaces of British ceramics all make appearances in my work, as do mathematics, music, architecture, biomimicry, design and the stylistic gestalt of particular individuals I know. I obsess over repetitive mark-making and employ sliptrailing, carving and nerikomi, among other techniques, to achieve my aims in clay.

The atmosphere at the ceramics studio of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology where I work demands a stance of learning when (as is often the case) the clay decides to take an unexpected turn. MIT values experimentation, collaboration and an emphasis on technical skill, and as such, the studio and my colleagues there push me to make work that is more confident and outward-looking.

In addition to clay, my primary medium, I am also a painter, photographer, jewelry designer, filmmaker, educational technologist, and connector—as well as a collector of friends, flowers, stones and leaves. My mind obsessively seeks out personal networks and connections. The pots I make look like the paintings, look like the necklaces, look like the installations, look like the films, and so on.

Availability of work

Availability of work

Currently, my work is available at my online gallery, Leili Art and Design, and at my personal site.

Additionally, as an early adopter of digital media as a primary tool for sharing my art, I have invested a lot of time curating and exhibiting my own completed artwork and works-in-progress, as well as others’ works of art. I’ve cultivated a “following” of more than 15,000 art-lovers, design aficionados, and ceramics patrons in various online venues, including social media.

I create wheel-thrown and hand-built stoneware pieces out of BMix-5 stoneware clay (cream-colored) and light brown stoneware clay with medium grog, fired to Cone 6 (~2200ºF/~1200ºC) in an electric kiln.
