Artists Statement

Artists Statement

Born in Paris in 1960, now living in Dumfries, Scotland, I have made sculpture since I was a child. The human form has always been my main inspiration, greatly influenced by contemporary dance, ancient mythologies, French sculptors such as Rodin and Maillol.

I see the human body as the interface between the mental, emotional and spiritual processes inside and the external manifestation of these in the world. I am fascinated by the beauty of the human form, impelled and inspired to create.

I have recently started an exploration of making decorative ceramics. Using slip trailing and sgraffito techniques on press moulded and hand formed earthenware assiettes, chargers and jugs. Here my inspiration is still the human form and beautiful flowers.

Technical Information

Technical Information

Method of working:
My ceramic sculpture is mostly made with Crank clay. This is fired to 1200/1220 degrees. I build up the form using slabs and sometimes I start with a basic press moulded form.

For my pottery I use sanded terracotta with slips, then I decorate with scraffito, slip-trailing and oxides. The plates and jugs and bowls are press moulded and/or slab built.

The earthenware is fired to 1060 degrees. All my work is fired in an electric kiln.
- Firing: oxidation
- Form: sculptural, figurative, vessels, vases and bowls, wall panels, one off pieces, tiles
- Techniques: carving, handbuilt, sgraffito, unglazed, slip-trailed
- Types /material: Earthenware, paperclay, stoneware, terracotta, mixed media
