Current Work
Current work comprises functional and decorative vessels made in salt/soda-glazed stoneware, reduction stoneware and porcelain. Recent work is influenced by an interest in artefacts from ancient cultures, and vessels from Europe, China and the Classical World. I make a range of work including functional table and kitchenware and individual pieces. I try to find a balance between the useful and the ornamental aspects of the vessel. The chance nature of vapour-glazing adds an element of unpredictability to the making process where deliberation and intuition contribute to the finished result.
Technical
Salt and soda ware is fired in a 30 cubic foot oil-fired kiln at 1300C. I use a10 cubic ft. propane gas kiln for biscuit and stoneware firings. Most work is thrown using an electric wheel. After turning and handling I use a variety of slips and raw glazes based on china and ball clays, some of which are coloured with oxides and commercial stains. All work is biscuit-fired. This enables further glaze treatments to be employed, extending the possibilities of surface qualities
