I am fascinated by Medieval art with its figurative drawings, paintings, stained glass, carvings and sculptures. I admire their simplicity of form imbued with solemn spirituality. This art, powerfully communicates a contemplative mood, a stillness, a knowing of something other. I find the same beguiling qualities in European and American Folk Art.
My work springs from these influences. In my work, I aspire to express mankind's spirituality and human condition. I use images such as boats, the sea, birds, other animals, trees, musicians and angels to be symbolic expressions of life's journey.
I make figurative stylized 3D ceramic sculptures, wall pieces and panels. My sculptures are earthenware fired, some are high earthenware fired with coloured stains and oxides to achieve a dry finish.
Other pieces are raku or smoke fired.
