Artist's Statement

Since graduating from the BA(Hons) ceramics course at UWIC in September 1999 I have been awarded a Princes Trust grant and loan with which to establish myself as a small business.

In the last four years I have taken part in a number of exhibitions and shows, including several major Ceramics Festivals. It seems that each one has led to new opportunities. I will be taking part in a selection of shows during 2003/4.

My most recent work has been a series of WW2 Aircraft made in a very similar style to my boats, While this was quite a challenge I was really pleased with the results, I am now looking at making another series of aircraft, possibly from the post war period, As these are quite amazing aircraft visually.

I grew up near Lowestoft on the east coast, which was once among the most important harbours in the country. most of the boats and associated industries have disappeared in recent years. Through my work I wish to evoke a feeling of celebration, and a sense of loss for the seafaring community, and the industries and establishments that supported them. My work looks back with affection at an era when "Britannia ruled the waves".

Using a variety of techniques including printing and press moulding I build up layers of texture onto sheets of clay which I then construct with. I then expand the layers with washes of oxides and underglaze colours. I use a very textured surface to give a feeling of decay, which emphasises the feeling of absence for the viewer.
