Current Work
In the current works I’m exploring sculptural concerns, expressed by tension and balance through the juxtaposition of forms upon one another.
Different levels of relationships are created at the contact point between the bodies; physical balance between open and the closed forms, ratio between the geometric surface pattern and the precise structure of the bodies that compose these works and the tension between the precise surface and the amorphous patterns resulting from the Raku technique.
The essence of the works is expressed by apparent juxtaposition of control and chance, soft and rigid, expected and unexpected, planned/arranged and amorphous.
Artist's Statement
I use ceramics to investigate the elements of ambiguity and dynamic of opposites. Ambiguity is expressed by the contrast between appearance and reality. Looking at the precise shapes that enclose and contain space gives the impression of solid and massive bodies when they are, in fact, surprisingly light and delicate. The tension between the constructed precise shapes, the geometric planned surface pattern and the unpredictable firing technique of “Naked Raku” is the basis for the element of dynamic of opposites. The investigation of these two elements is achieved by the following techniques: slab-hand building, burnishing, terra sigillata and Raku firing.
Only two major colors dominate the clay bodies. However, within this limited color scheme, there is a large variety of hues and tones, which are created without my intervention. The final result depends on the ratio between the control and random
Technical Information
The objects are slab built using a mixture of Porcelain and Stoneware, burnished and when bone dry a thin layer of terra sigillata is applied. Bisque firing is at 980˚C. Design sketches are drown on the bisque fired objects followed with tapping. A “resist” slip and a glaze are applied and objects are fired in a Raku gas kiln to 1000˚C, before removal to smoke chamber. When cold the glaze is “peeling off” followed with slip washing and when dry a layer of wax is applied.
