I am constantly curious and fascinated by the medium I work with, it’s infinite, and suits my need for multiple working methods to achieve the aesthetics that I’m after.
I have two main bodies of work, thrown functional ware which seems unconsciously to capture the mood of my adopted home, Malta, and conceptual work.
My conceptual pieces are produced through a lengthy design and development process, usually triggered by social interaction, news items and often display my British sense of humour. Techniques in their making may include throwing, slip casting, extruding or slab building.
I am currently producing a wide range of thrown functional ware in stoneware clay with glaze layers that I have developed over the last five years.
The most popular pieces are mugs, jugs, tea bowls and teapots. Mugs come in various descriptions and I have a quirky series called Sperm Buddy mugs which started out as a limited edition series but I can’t now seem to shake off, however I have become quite fond of. Recent additions to my range also include Rock Pool Mugs which are quite intricate sculptural pieces and have been shipped to customers in Canada, America and Scotland.
The best online place to see my daily activities and creations is on facebook https://www.facebook.com/pages/Sue-Mifsud-Ceramics/159438384121751?ref=hl .
Customers outside of Malta can contact me directly with orders.
In Malta I participate regularly in Patches Artisan Market, Malta Artisan Market, have a limited amount of work at My Melts in Mosta.
I annually hold a Ceramics Open Day towards Christmas. General enquiries can also be sent through my FB page or to my email address.
I fire to cone 6 in two electric kilns and achieve variegated colours by applying multiple layers of glazes that I mix myself. I like a surface with depth and detail creating minute landscapes.
Although born and raised in the British West Midlands, I have lived for many years and work as a full time artist in Malta, a tiny island in the middle of the Mediterranean.
My affair with clay started in 1993 under the tuition of Maltese Ceramic Artist Anna Ciavola and I spent a good few years trying to find my own voice in the medium, setting up my own studio in 2003.
Wanting a better understanding of the process and to gain more knowledge I applied for the BA (Hons) Design, Ceramics course at Glasgow School of Art and graduated my part time studies in 2011 with a First. In 2010 I had already joined a heritage pottery as their Technical Manager and was earning a living working there in the mornings and at my own studio in the afternoons. This offered me two very different spaces in which to create work using very different methods to achieve two very different ranges of work. The heritage pottery produces traditional hand painted slip cast items in white earthenware clay, in my own studio I design and create contemporary work which is vibrantly glazed.
In December 2014 I made the decision to quit my morning employment and devote my time and efforts to my own growing studio practise. To date that difficult decision has proven to be a good one with unexpected opportunities finding me.
Teaching is also part of what I do, I am currently working with young adults with disabilities in a funded project. Each summer I teach groups of children from 7 to 13 years of age and I also offer one to one tuition in throwing.
