Artist's Statement

At Lowestoft College in 1987, where Susan was a student, she became very interested in the forms made by domestic potters, such as teapots, coffee pots, jugs and bowls. During this time her own work was very traditional, but over the years, throwing was replaced by hand-building, and the work has developed in new directions, recently moving back to new functional work.

My new range of functional white earthenware is decorated with stripes of blue, black, and gold with a transparent glaze. The work is thrown and altered, the bases and spouts are handbuilt from textured clay. This new work has a more painterly approach to the decoration using simple brush strokes.

I make bowls, jugs, dishes, vases teapots and mugs. Prices start at £12

I also make one off dishes using coloured slips with thrown and altered rims. These are influenced by the changing scenery of the river estuary near where I live, marks made on the mud at low tide, the reeds near the shore and the variety of bird life.

I am the author of the book The Art of Handbuilt Ceramics'
