Artist's Statement

My work is concerned with the generative energy of being. I investigate the relationship between the energies of the natural environment and humanity as integral elements of an all-embracing Nature, its systems of natural existences, forces, changes, and events.
I observe that I am effected by and directly connected to the phenomenological energy that passes through all of nature. This energy also flows through humanity and the objects I produce. It is this primary interconnection of Nature, self and object which concerns me.

Current Work

Primarily woodfired hand formed slab or wheel thrown vessels which are aesthetic and functional in nature. While most forms, such as cups, bowl, platters and vases are incised with archetypal imagery, large bowls are often heavily carved.

Available for lectures and workshops in ceramics and also painting. Commissions and direct orders accepted.
Building a double chambered woodkiln at the studio in Spring 2002.
Future workshops planned where potters of all ability levels are welcome to participate.

Technical Information

The work is fired in various woodkilns, such as those of Peter Callas, Joy Brown, Pascal Chmelar, Roger Baumann and Jasper Brinton, for 24 hours to one week in duration. Mainly white stoneware and procelain, glazed with shinos, tenmoku and ash glazes.

Temperatures from Cone 10-12 / 1285-l300+ degrees C and lightly salted (3.5 lbs) in 24 hr. firings. Surfaces are softly dusted and mottled or dripping with fluxed ash giving dynamism and organic beauty to the form.

History

Born and raised in rural Derbyshire, England. Studied ceramics in high school and sculpture at Derby College of Art, Cardiff College of Art, an Art Teaching Certificate from University of South Wales, Cardiff and a Master's Degree from Yale University.
Made sculpture and painted for thirty years before returning full time to clay.
Lived, worked and exhibited in NYC with several works in museum collection including the Guggenheim Museum and Brooklyn Museum, USA. Derby Museum, UK recently acquired a large woodfired carved bowl which will be exhibited in 2002.
In 1998 relocated to live and work in the country, 50 miles north of NYC in the Hudson Valley. Built studio and kiln at East Mountain Studio. Continues to visit UK each year.
