Current Work

Trevor Chaplin currently produces a range of hand-thrown functional 'soda-glazed pottery' for use in the kitchen, and other individual vessels for the rest of the home.
His studio is set in rural Wiltshire where he has lived and potted for 24 years. Trevor's pots reflect his free spirit and love of the countryside where he was brought up and has lived for most of his life. His work attempts to capture observations from his surroundings, where pre-historic relics and modern day co-exist.
Most of Trevor's pots are thrown on the potters wheel. Waves of thick liquid clays are applied over the surface, creating texture, colour and movement.
The pots are finally fired in a 30cu.ft. gas kiln to a maximum of 1300 deg.C. Soda is sprayed into the kiln at high temperature to achieve the characteristic orange-peel surface. His pots are all made to be used and enjoyed.
Trevor is a Professional Member of the Craft Potter's Association.

Technical Information

Kiln: 30 cu.ft. down-draft gas fired vapour kiln, with twin burners. Max. temp. 1300deg.C. Firing duration is 16-17 hours, 2 days to cool.
Pots: Thrown on a wheel, shaped and manipulated. Tooled surface, thick slips to texture and colour. Vapour glazed using sodium products.

History

Initially Trevor trained in Architecture in the 1960's, then as a teacher specialising in Ceramics and Design (1970-73). His interest in studio pottery began in the 1960's with frequent visits to the Leach Pottery, St. Ives.
Present studio in Wiltshire since 1976, full time for the last 11 years.
