The 1st Australian Ceramics Triennale (formerly the National Ceramics Conference) at Sydney, Australia
When:17 - 20 July 2009The 1st Australian Ceramics Triennale (formerly the National Ceramics Conference) will be held in Sydney, Australia from 17th July Š 20th July, 2009. Facing the Future will focus on the relationship between contemporary ceramic practice and the emergence of diverse social, cultural and technological global forces.
We invite individual papers or suggestions for panels on any aspect of The 2009 Australian Ceramics TriennaleÕs three broad themes Š Facing Asia, Future Practice and Activate / Cultivate. The theme Facing Asia will focus on contemporary ceramics practice in the Asia-Pacific region and its recent global impact. Future Practice aims to identify potential trends within the ceramics discipline by concentrating on the work of emerging practitioners, hybrid and merging praxis, new technologies and materials, and evolving environmental and ethical concerns. The Activate / Cultivate theme seeks to address educational, community, specialisms and local trends in ceramics and its discourses, and provide professional and grassroots support to the practitioner, collector and educator.
Suggested topics include:
* Alternative sites/sights: working outside the mainstream, outsider art, community art
* Politics and Place: the changing world of global ceramics, the affect of place on individual practice, social and ethical consequences of ceramic production
* Education Trends: institutional trends, ceramics in primary, secondary and tertiary institutions, art as therapy, mentors, master/apprentice
* Hybrid Practices: practitioners using ceramics within an expanded field of visual arts
* New Technologies: their incorporation into the ceramic medium and process, the social and philosophical affect on studio practice
* Individual Voices: artist talks about individual and collaborative studio practices
* Clay and Text: critiques, reviews and meditations on the spoken and written discourse surrounding contemporary ceramics practice in the last decade
After visiting our website, interested parties should address the above themes, however issues relevant to contemporary ceramics that fall outside the major themes will also be considered.
Peer Reviewed Papers
Each paper will be blind reviewed by two reviewers, drawn from the conference organising committee and others selected by the conference organisers.
General Papers (Non-refereed papers)
These papers must still meet normal presentation standards and address the broad conference themes. They will be selected based on relevance to conference themes and suitability to the program.
